Vence 04

Countinuing on the square, we had our elevenses at the tea-shop from which yesterday’s photograph was taken.
…and I used the name tea-shop advisedly.

Porte d’Orient, or Porte du Siege or Porte de Cagnes or Porte de la Brèche (18th c.). This gate was made and the buildings realigned so Monseigneur Pisani de la Gaude, Bishop of Vence, could arrive at the door of his episcopal palace without stepping down from his carriage.
The street behind leads direct up to the square which the cathedral sits on.

The 11th Century Cathédrale de la Nativité-de-Marie de Vence sits in the square in the old town. It sits on a Roman temple which was built on a pagan shrine, built on a Gallic sacrificial site, and so on.

Vence is a little town high in the hills. The old town is still circled by its wall.
These are views of the streets in the old town.

We were staying in a friend’s flat up the hill in Nice. I took this photograph from the bus-stop looking towards the Alps.

These were taken as we strolled along the Promenade des Anglais. It took its current form in 1822, when Lewis Way, an Englishman who lived in Nice during the winter months, financed the two-meter wide path.
A few days after these photographs were taken, violent waves wiped out all of the beach cafes. The thrid time it has happened in the last seven years.
We were actually onto the Quai des Etats-Unis alongside the old town, when I took this photograph of the Divo Francisco a Paula Charitas.

The first three photographs are of the fruit and vegetable stalls in the openair market in the Cours Saleya. What we bought tasted as good as these look.
In another part of the old town was the open air fish market.
This is the Taco D’Oli, the restuarant in which we had lunch – another good meal.
This is a view from the Coline du Chateau over the old town – the Cours Saleya is just to the left of the trees on the right.

On the way back from St Jean Cap Ferrat to Nice we stopped off in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
It is fairly steep down to the harbour.
This is the Rue Obscure, a covered in street dating back to the 13th Century.
The harbour here isn’t quite so full of expensive boats.

Just east along the coast from Nice is probably the most expensive real estate area, St Jean Cap Ferrat.
As you might expect, the harbour is full of expensive boats.
There are more, larger boats anchored in the bay.
This inflatable kept moving from place to place and then the diver would stick his head over the side, under water, have a look around and then move on. I wounder what he was looking for?
This massive bronze statue of the Madonna and Child is to be found outside the chapel of St Hospice.
This is the inside of the chapel.

Entrevaux is defensively very strong due to being almost surrounded by Le Var and backed by the massive citadel rockface.
These are Le Var, downstream and upstream.
With flowers of course.
Dominated by the peaks surrounding it.
