1st February 2010
I then moved slightly South to Doonfoot.
I wonder how long Greenan castle will remain on the headland.

Another short video taken from the Millenium Bridge over the Doon, panning from Greenan Castle in the South over the Firth of Clyde with Arran looming out of the mist and onto Ayr Bay and the town of Ayr.

Further into the walk we came upriver along the River Doon. These photographs were taken at the old broken-down mill weir. The mill was close a long time ago.
Look closely at the first photograph before moving to the second and at the second before moving to the third. See if you can spot what is changing (apart from my slight vantage position change)before you get to the third one.

19th August 2009
The postings for the next three days were all taken on the same day which had been warm, sunny and clear until we went out for a walk. Then it turned into a misty day.
This view is from the esplanade over the mouth of the River Doon looking towards Greenan Castle and the Heads of Ayr.
The Heads of Ayr demonstrates with unusual excellence the internal structure of a major volcanic vent of Lower Carboniferous age and its interrelations with the surrounding strata. Both horizontal and vertical sections are well exposed and easily examined. Apart from its obvious educational value, the vent has been found to contain in addition to numerous fragments of volcanic and country rock, rare nodules consisting of an unusual assemblage of rocks characterised by richness in iron and magnesium which has been interpreted as having been derived from levels close to the base of the Earth’s crust beneath the Midland Valley. These nodules suppy critical evidence as to the nature of the lower crust and the underlying upper mantle beneath Britain during Carboniferous Period – evidence which is of great importance in understanding the volcanic activity which occurred at that time. The site has been studied by geologists since the early days in the development of the science and consequently has historical significance.

A good example of the use of a zoom lens!
These swallows look as if they are beginning to gather for the long flight back South.

In this case sand-castles. These two shot of Ayr beach, one long distance and the other zoomed, show that even on quite a good day with fairly good temperatures, the number of people on the beach, especially kids building sand-castles, was minimal. It wasn’t so long ago I could remember the beach being so crowded that it was difficult to find a place to sit down – or is that just nostalgia and a poor memory?

These two herring gulls caught my eye as they, with perfect timing, would turn their heads first one way then the other. I looked for the thread connecting them, but it must have been invisible!
