I then moved slightly South to Doonfoot.
I wonder how long Greenan castle will remain on the headland.

The postings for the next three days were all taken on the same day which had been warm, sunny and clear until we went out for a walk. Then it turned into a misty day.
This view is from the esplanade over the mouth of the River Doon looking towards Greenan Castle and the Heads of Ayr.
The Heads of Ayr demonstrates with unusual excellence the internal structure of a major volcanic vent of Lower Carboniferous age and its interrelations with the surrounding strata. Both horizontal and vertical sections are well exposed and easily examined. Apart from its obvious educational value, the vent has been found to contain in addition to numerous fragments of volcanic and country rock, rare nodules consisting of an unusual assemblage of rocks characterised by richness in iron and magnesium which has been interpreted as having been derived from levels close to the base of the Earth’s crust beneath the Midland Valley. These nodules suppy critical evidence as to the nature of the lower crust and the underlying upper mantle beneath Britain during Carboniferous Period – evidence which is of great importance in understanding the volcanic activity which occurred at that time. The site has been studied by geologists since the early days in the development of the science and consequently has historical significance.

A nice easy misplaced quote in the title – especially if you remember what day yesterday was!
We’re looking out from Ayr Beach at the mouth of the Doon past Greenan Castle and the Heads of Ayr.

Greenan Castle was built in the 15th century on the site of an ancient iron age fort. It’s perched on an overhanging rockface, so at some time it will collapse onto the shore. However it seems good for a few years yet.
Some researchers are said to believe that the original fort may well have been an Arthurian stronghold and one of the possible sites of Camelot.
Mind you I haven’t heard anyone suggest that Queen Elizabeth the first of England ever slept here!!
[Duffy, I promise you that I'll take a photograph of Ayr when it's raining - if that ever happens.]
