13th July 2009
All of these photographs were taken from Lyle Hill overlooking the town of Gourock and the River Clyde.
I was using the big lens on the camera (on a tripod) to take this view over the pier, railway terminus and the town with the entrance to the Holy Loch on the other side. You can just see one of the Western Ferries car ferries plying from McInroy’s Point to Hunter’s Quay. One of the two Caledonian MacBrayne car ferries which ply between Gourock and Dunoon is tied up at the left end of the pier.
This is a slightly different angle to view the Arrochar Alps.
This is a view of the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Ferry (passenger) which plies between Gourock, Kilcreggan and Helensburgh returning to Gourock.
I swapped the lens over to the smaller one and took this wider view which shows Dunoon and Loch Long as well as the Holy Loch on the other side.
One of the reasons for being up on Lyle Hill was to photograph the Free French monument – a mixture of an anchor and the Cross of Lorraine. The monument is dedicated to the memory of the Free French Naval forces who sailed from Greenock in the years 1940 through 1945 and gave their lives in the battle of the Atlantic for the liberation of France and the success of the Allied Cause. The money for the monument was raised by subscription amongst the crews of the ships of the Free French Navy which sailed from Greenock.

I took this at Largs just to show how wide the vista is from Largs over the upper reaches of the Firth of Clyde. There a four large cargo vessels anchored out there, but they look fairly insignificant.

There has been heavy rain in the area, on and off over the past week. With all the water that has fallen, the rivers have been in spate including the River Ayr and these are pictures of what it has carried downstream and left at the side right in the town just short of the harbour. Given more of the same weather and these could end up being washed out into the Clyde Estuary.

Today’s pictures are taken from the highest point in Cumbrae (127 Metres). There are quite a few memorial plaques attached to the surrounding rocks making it obvious that folks ashes have been scattered here.
There is also a large religious tract in place.
The following two photos are evidence of ‘his works’.

Just is case you were feeling sorry for me with the Sunday snow pictured yesterday, within an hour of those photographs there was no trace of any snow.
These photographs were taken later on Sunday from the car park on the Gleniffer Braes above Paisley.
The first is taken looking to the East over Glasgow, Bishopbriggs and other conurbations in the Central Belt.
The second is taken looking North up over Bowling, Balloch and the towns there towards the Highlands.
The I put on the big lens at full magnification and you get Ben Lomond in all it’s glory.
Then I eased back on the magnification to show the hills around it.

Today’s photographs are from Culzean Estate and were taken last Saturday.
The first view is to the South, where you can see Ailsa Craig in the background.
The second is to the North up over the Cumbraes.
The third is to the West with the Isle of Arran prominent. If you look closely you can see the Troon to Ireland High Speed Ferry in front of Arran.

A nice easy misplaced quote in the title – especially if you remember what day yesterday was!
We’re looking out from Ayr Beach at the mouth of the Doon past Greenan Castle and the Heads of Ayr.

Took these shots down at Ayr Beach this morning with a fairly strong wind gusting about and the Firth of Clyde showing white horses……
…… and the birds trying to cope!
